Pubs closing? Could things be getting worse?
In a recent post I was wondering why Henley seems to be losing pubs at an alarming rate…. could things be about to get worse?
Disappearing Henley Pubs…
When I started drinking in Henley in the 80s we had around 20 pubs in the town centre (see the map on the Pub Page which was drawn in 1995 and was based on a Brakspears town centre map from the 1980). My grandmother told me that when she was a girl (think 1910) there were around 40 pubs in Henley and the immediate area (this I have confirmed by looking at the ‘time-line’ at the start of the excellent book ‘Hostelries of Henley‘ by Ann H G Cottingham, which was published in 2000).
